"This year at Nellie U we got to plants herbs in groups for the living wall in our school. We also made mini-models of what our group wanted our field to look like. My favourite part of our Nellie U was when the landscape architects came into our school to present and teach us how you design a naturalization area. They taught us how to place benches together and create interesting spaces. I like watering the plants." By: Jake (grade 4)
"This year at Nellie U I was in Nellies Naturalists. We got to plant herbs and added it to the living wall. I found that everything we did in Nellie U always had to do with nature and that was one of the reasons why I wanted to be part of the Nellie U. My favourite part was doing our models of our naturalization space. The reason why ti was my favourite part was because I had so much doing it and I had to put my mind into it. How I put my mind into it I really thought about what I would make in a naturalization space then I put these ideas in my model." By: Karma (grade 3)
"One of my favourite parts of this Nellie U was making the models because we got to use our creativity and we got to use real materials form nature. I thought this was really cool! I also liked when Julianna came in to talk about outside and teaching us about how to communicate and socialize when we are outside in nature. I also liked sketching out nature on the first day. We got to sketch out nature. We got to do a nature scavenger hunt. On the first day we also got very cool notebook, our nature journals that we get to keep." By: Nina (grade 5)
"I really liked when we all got to plant seeds because we got to share ideas with each other. I really like getting dirty in dirt!" By: Claire (grade 2)
NELLIE U - 2017 Mrs. Delaney is running a Nellie U course called Nellie's Naturalists. Throughout the course we have transplanted plants, done some nature observations and sketching, and will be creating 3D models of what the Naturalization area should look like. In our Nellie U program, we encourage students to connect to nature and become a Nellie's Naturalist. Mrs. Delaney talked to us about what a Naturalist is and some of the things they do, such as: Observing, sketching and becoming part of nature. We also were lucky to work with Michelle from Grounds for Change to help us with our designs for our Naturalization area. At the end of Nellie U, our group is organizing a plant sale to help raise money. We are thinking that we may be able to raise enough to send us a step forward with our Naturalization area. Part of the sale will be to showcase to students and parents what we have been working on over the course of the last few weeks and our living lab. The plants we are selling will come from our moveable greenhouse and living wall. All of the proceeds will go toward Nellie's Naturalists environmental initiatives.
